USDⓈ-M or COIN-M on Binance? Comparing Fee Baselines Between Two Contract Families

Binance offers futures settled in stablecoins and futures settled in the underlying coin, with separate fee tables. Learn how to compare the baseline cost of a position in each before choosing.

Binance futures come in two main families: contracts margined and settled in stablecoins, often called USDⓈ-M, and contracts margined and settled in the underlying coin, called COIN-M. Each has its own fee table on the official fee page, and the way notional value is expressed differs between them. Traders often pick one family by habit and never compare. This guide shows how to work out a fee baseline for a typical position in each family so the choice rests on numbers, not familiarity.

Reading two separate fee tables

Open the official Binance fee page and locate the futures section. You will find separate rates for the stablecoin-margined and coin-margined families, each broken down by account level and by maker and taker role. Note your level from your account and copy the four relevant rates. Do not assume they are identical; check them directly and record the date you looked.

Expressing a position in comparable terms

In stablecoin-margined contracts, notional value is quoted in the stablecoin. In coin-margined contracts, positions are often expressed in contracts with a fixed value, and margin and fees are in the underlying coin. To compare, convert your intended position into the same currency at the current price. Then apply each family's rates to that notional value for both entry and exit.

Differences beyond the fee rate

The settlement currency affects your exposure. With coin-margined contracts, your margin itself rises and falls with the coin's price, which changes how gains and losses feel in stablecoin terms. Funding settlement schedules and calculations may also differ by contract. The help centre explains each family. Include funding in your baseline if you plan to hold positions through settlements.

Writing down the result

Record the round-trip fee for a typical position in each family, at the maker and taker combinations you actually use, plus expected funding. Keep the note with your trading plan. Recalculate when your level changes or the fee page is updated. With this baseline, the choice between families becomes a clear trade-off between cost, settlement currency and exposure.

Scenario checkpoint

  • Copy maker and taker rates for both contract families at your account level.
  • Convert positions into the same currency before comparing the fee costs.
  • Consider how coin-denominated margin changes your exposure to price moves.
  • Recalculate the baseline when your level changes or the fee page is updated.
