Reduce-only orders on Binance Futures: closing positions without flipping them
It happens to almost every futures trader once. You place a sell limit to close a long, then partly close the position manually, and later the original order fills in full. Instead of closing, it opens a fresh short you never wanted. On Binance Futures the reduce-only option exists precisely to stop this. An order marked reduce-only can only shrink an existing position; any part that would increase or reverse it is cancelled. Understanding how it behaves in one-way and hedge modes saves both money and stress.
What reduce-only actually does at execution time
When you tick reduce-only, Binance checks the order against your current position at execution time. If you are long two contracts and a reduce-only sell for three fills, only two are executed and the remainder is cancelled. If the position has already been closed by another order, the reduce-only order will not open anything new. This is particularly useful when you have several exit orders stacked at different prices and cannot predict which will fill first.
Take-profit and stop orders already behave this way
Take-profit and stop-loss orders attached through the position panel are typically set to close the position, which already limits them to reducing exposure. The risk sits mainly with plain limit or market orders you place separately as exits. Get into the habit of ticking reduce-only on every manual exit order. It costs nothing and removes a whole category of mistakes that usually surface at the worst possible moment, during fast markets.
One-way mode versus hedge mode
In one-way mode, you have a single net position per contract, so reduce-only works intuitively. In hedge mode, long and short positions exist side by side, and exits are linked to a specific side. Orders closing a long are tied to that long position, which provides similar protection, but you must choose the correct side when placing them. Binance's help centre explains the position modes; check which one is active before building exit orders.
Fees and records for reduce-only exits
A reduce-only limit order resting on the book is charged as a maker when it fills, while one crossing the spread is charged as a taker, the same as any other order. The fee page shows the rates for your tier. In your trade log, mark which fills were exits and whether reduce-only was used. If you see unexpected position flips in past records, they usually trace back to exit orders placed without it.
