Locking down a Binance account before you start trading futures

Guides · 2026-10-07

Opening a futures account usually means moving more money onto the platform and checking it more often, sometimes from several devices. That makes the account a more attractive target. Before placing a first futures trade, it is worth spending half an hour tightening the basics: a unique password, a strong second factor, a withdrawal allowlist, clean sessions and careful API keys. None of this is complicated, and all of it is easier to do now than after a problem. This guide walks through the steps for Binance users. Menu names may change, so follow the official help centre.

Password and email first

Use a long, unique password for Binance that you do not use anywhere else, stored in a password manager. Do the same for the email account linked to Binance, and enable two-step verification on that email. If someone gains control of your email, they can often reset other passwords, so the email deserves as much protection as the exchange account itself.

A second factor that resists phishing

Prefer an authenticator app or a passkey over text messages where your account allows it. Passkeys are especially useful because they only work with the genuine site or app, which makes fake login pages far less dangerous. Register a backup method on a separate device so that losing one phone does not lock you out of an account that may be holding open positions.

Limit where funds can go

Turn on the withdrawal address allowlist so that funds can only leave for addresses you have approved in advance. Add addresses carefully, copying them from the receiving side with the correct network. If you use API keys for trading tools, give them trading permission only, never withdrawal permission, and restrict them to a fixed IP address where the option exists.

Clean up sessions and stay alert

Review active sessions and recognised devices, and sign out of anything you do not recognise or no longer use. Turn on notifications for logins, security changes and withdrawals. Be especially wary of messages claiming your futures position is at risk and asking you to log in through a link. Always open the official app yourself to check, and contact support only through it.
